We didn't have filo dough, but really wanted baklava, so we used the Trader Joe's puff pastry and it turned out really good!
Ingredients
Dough
One roll of Trader Joe's puff pastry dough
Filling
16 oz walnuts
1.5 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cardamom
1/4 tsp salt
1 orange zest
1 tsp vanilla
Syrup
Equal parts honey, water and sugar
Citrus rind
1 tsp vanilla
Process
Preheat the oven to 350F
Add the walnuts, cinnamon, cardamom, salt, orange zest, and vanilla into a food processor
Blend until evenly mixed
Roll out the puff pastry so it is paper thin
Cut to be the size of your baking dish
Brush with butter (for each layer of dough)
Cover the dough with the walnut mixture
Cover the walnut mixture with another layer of dough
Repeat as many times as desired (we did 3 layers of dough)
Cut a diamond pattern into the dough
Bake until the top is crispy (sorry we didn't have a recipe and just eyeballed it)
Mix water, honey, sugar, orange rind, and vanilla in a sauce pan
Bring to a simmer
Once the baklava is done, pour the syrup mixture over the dough
